Yoga: Lion’s Breath

Astrologists tell us that this month’s supermoon in Leo has more ferocious energy than your typical new moon arrival…it’s all about letting your light shine, embracing your special unique qualities and letting others benefit from them. Now is the time to follow creative projects and passions that we’ve been quietly thinking about this year and to feel more comfortable with stepping into the spotlight, being more spontaneous and more playful…who could resist?

If you feel like you might need a little help getting there, then practicing Simhasana, Lion’s Breath (as beautifully demonstrated by me below) is the perfect practice.

I love practicing Lion’s breath with my students.  It’s a fun, rejuvenating breathing technique that helps you tap into your inner power and shed any inhibitions. Practice in Easy Pose (cross-legged) in Hero Pose (on your knees with ankles crossed beneath you) in Downward Dog or Cat/Cow or lying down in Savasana, whatever works best for you.

It’s a great way to start your day, or use during the day when you need a little pick-me-up.

  • Sit or rest comfortably, taking your hands to your knees if seated or to the tops of the thighs if lying down.
  • Relax your shoulders
  • Spread your fingers wide
  • Take a few breaths in and out through the nose
  • Take your gaze to your third eye space, between your eyebrows
  • Inhale through your nose
  • Open the mouth wide and stretch your tongue out as far as it will go towards your chin
  • Exhale slowly and strongly through the mouth, making a breathy‘haaaa’sound
  • Repeat up to ten times (two or three is fine to start with), relaxing the face between each ‘roar’
  • Take a few breaths in and out through the nose

More Love Lion’s Breath affirmation:

“I communicate with ease.”

Love the benefits of Lion’s Breath

  • Warms you up and increases your energy
  • Relieves stress and frustration
  • Stretches your entire face and relaxes your facial muscles
  • Relieves tension in the jaw, neck and chest
  • Increases blood flow in face, throat and tongue
  • Stimulates the nerves in the eyes, keeping them healthy
  • Improves digestion
  • Increases confidence
  • Helps unblock the throat chakra

Let me know how you feel after letting yourself roar!
